Get to know the Universe better

Stellarium is a stargazing app that enables users to see the names and patterns of stars, constellations, and planets in the solar system. Users can search for specific objects and view graphics and imagery of the galaxy.

Star light, star bright

Take the first steps on your astronomical journey, as Stellarium offers a range of features that appeal to non-specialists.

Lose yourself in the stunning galaxy far, far away with Stellarium. It’s a stargazing app that brings the solar system closer to you. Learn the basic information behind planets in our solar system, including their properties and distance from the Earth.

Enter your location and time zone for a more personalized view of the sky. Stellarium offers you the chance to display constellation contours. If you wanted to name a constellation you saw in the sky, Stellarium can help you. View the various shapes and their names, and match it up to the constellations you can see above you.

Customize what the app shows you by configuring which objects you’d like to see. Choose between stars, comets, constellations, planets, and galaxies. Or just choose to view all of them and be amazed by the intricate space system.

Adapt Stellarium to your telescope lens, which the design of the app is most suited for. You can line up your telescope with the app, which will inform you on which space objects you’re viewing. Telescope mode is perfect for photography, as it tells you precisely which objects will fit into your lens.

The only thing that lets the software down is the lack of high-quality graphics. Stellarium brings you closer to the galaxy but doesn’t offer a good chance to marvel at the beauty of them. The imagery leaves a lot to be desired and could definitely be improved.

Where can you run this program?

Stellarium is available to run on all versions of Windows on desktop only.

Is there a better alternative?

Stellarium offers a range of basic and elaborate uses for those interested in astronomy. It’s lack of high-resolution graphics, however, make other programs such as SkyView and Star Hopper better alternatives.

Our take

This software is a great introduction to the world of astronomy. It provides useful features, information about space objects, and a telescope mode to help with astronomical viewing. It’s let down by poor graphics, however.

Should you download it?

Definitely give Stellarium a download if you want to explore the galaxy and learn new things about the solar system. It is an entertaining and intriguing software that will feed your curiosity about the sky above you.
