Chat chaos, be gone
Finally, an app that helps groups coordinate their communication. Create chat rooms for each department, easily reached using a hashtag.
Organize your entire office with one app
With channels for each department, it takes seconds to send a message to an entire team
A big killer for new software groups and start-ups is lack of accessible chat tools. Many companies rely on email as the main form of communication between employees. Slack provides a modern solution by organizing all your discussions and taking it to the next level.
This app lets members chat or call via the channels, and each channel is hashtag marked. Want to send a memo to everyone in Character Art? #Character-art is where you’ll find them. Get your whole development group on the platform and they can sync it to their phones.
It’s similar to Skype and Messenger in the general layout, but that’s where the resemblances end.
You can exchange files by simply dragging and dropping. Window swapping will be a thing of the past as this program seamlessly integrates with other software packages like Google Drive, Dropbox, and Twitter.
The app has a beautiful, clean, modern interface. Despite that, it can take time for all users to get up to speed on it.
While it’s easy to chat, it’s also easy to lose the conversations as your team grows. Discord has a similar problem (albeit for a different audience), but if your team is so active that you’re losing the messages, you might want to move to a different app.
Discord offers group video chats, and this would have been nice to see in Slack.
Where can you run this program?
Slack is available for Android, iOS, Mac, and Windows platforms.
Is there a better alternative?
Generally, no. While Discord may have some desirable features, Slack has more integrations with services like Trello, Gmail, and BitBucket.
Our take
It’s a good tool for small teams and start-ups, but any group larger than twenty people should look elsewhere. It looks good and connects to a lot of third-party services that you might need, something that Discord can’t do efficiently. Slack is usually the choice for game and software developers specifically because of those integrations, which are a huge benefit.
Should you download it?
Absolutely yes! Organize all your communications in one app and watch productivity soar.
