Statcounter lets you pull reports on website traffic, with visitor analytics available on your mobile device. It’s user-friendly with limited features in the free edition.

Real-time web analytics

Statcounter is a basic web traffic tracker app with real-time monitoring and many premium features, though the free version is rather underwhelming.

Statcounter provides a simple solution for webmasters trying to manage their projects with real data. By adding the tracker to your pages, you’ll receive real-time updates every time visitors stop by your site. With the Android app, you can monitor web analytics on the go.

The app incorporates all the same features as the desktop version. You can log in with your password or use a “magic link” email. Each project you add to your account features on a list displaying basic stats. Web analytics are updated in real-time.

Adding a project to your account is relatively simple. To start getting real-time web analytics data, you’ll have to insert code for the Statcounter tracker. The app offers instructions on how to achieve this on platforms like Tumblr. The steps to add trackers can be very tedious, though.

Every new account gets a 30-day free trial of premium features. These include a very large log space, detailed custom reports, and live notifications for VIP visitors. Paid accounts also get preferential treatment with customer support and no ads.

Standard features left once the free trial runs out include aggregate web traffic statistics for today and yesterday, up to your log space limit. You can also see the monthly and overall totals. Lifetime totals are tracked independently of your remaining log space.

Paid accounts get a log space ranging from 100,000 to 100,000,000 visitors. Free accounts get 500. Free trial accounts get 100,000 for 30 days.

While a full range of ad-supported stat pages is available, the free log space is extremely limited. Log space determines the size of the database used to compile web analytics. A full range of stats drawn from a very small log won’t be very informative.

Where can you run this program?

The Statcounter app is available for mobile devices running Android OS 4.1 and up. Separate iOS and Windows apps are also available.

Is there a better alternative?

Yes. For more in-depth statistics, Google Analytics is the industry standard, though far more complex. Clicky and Netmarketshare provide similar functionality with more flexible pricing. Histats provides all the same features for free.

Our take

Statcounter is a simpler alternative to Google Analytics, with a more user-friendly presentation. However, it’s got very limited free features and log space compared to the competition.

Should you download it?

Yes. If you want an easy, free real-time traffic tracker with an Android app, it’s a suitable solution.
