Create your own adventure

Runescape was the first MMORPG that offered a free-to-play (F2P) experience; it still has one of the largest player bases. This massive open-world universe lets you create and develop your characters at your own pace.

Get busy crafting

Runescape players roam around in seemingly endless worlds slaying monsters and gathering treasures through multitudes of quests and mini-games.

The complexity of character development is one of the best things of Runescape. From appearance to power, players have complete control over how their heroes will grow. You can do daily missions to gain experience points, which let you level up and become stronger. There are also mini-games and hidden quests you can unlock to reap better rewards. These secret challenges are very hard to find, however, and it’s part of the reason that this game is so grindy.

Its graphics may feel somewhat simple and dull, but Runescape has a very powerful game engine. Gameplay is always smooth and stutter-free. Sadly, the server doesn’t share this quality and can be unreliable at times. Depending on your region, you may experience frequent disconnects.

As its namesake suggests, the endgame is all about crafting powerful runes and maximizing your character’s potentials. The only way to beat the game, besides getting stronger and engaging in constant battles with in-game entities and other players, is to keep growing. The fighting is far from an adrenaline rush. The Runescape combat mechanics are so slow they seem almost turn-based.

Runescape lets you play for free, but to get the full experience, you must subscribe to a membership. Paying members have a vast advantage over free players. They receive exclusive items, runes, and skills.

Our take

Runescape is great for MMO players who wish to avoid the pressure of attaining endgame status, yet still want to stay competitive. The ongoing progression caters to a diverse player base.

Should you download it?

Yes. If your idea of an ideal digital investment is thousands of hours grinding and finding treasures, Runescape will serve you well.
