Friday Night Funkin' Girlfriend Mode 0/3

Friday Night Funkin’ Girlfriend Mode is a free mod for the rhythm game by ninjamuffin99. The mod shifts the gameplay a bit by letting the main character become a girl; you go through the same skill challenges, aiming to kiss your partner and demonstrate your talents.

Gender-swapped FNF

Girlfriend Mode is a skin mod, not bringing any new gameplay elements to the original, boyfriend-driven title. In essence, you’ll play the identical Dance Dance Revolution-inspired rhythm game, except as a female protagonist.

The story is straightforward. You want to kiss your girlfriend, but her dad is standing in between you and that goal. You’ll have to prove your worth by showing off your skills on the dance floor to earn his approval.

If you do well enough during chapter one, you’ll go on to beat other characters and display your musical skills.

Simple mechanics

The controls are straightforward to learn but challenging to master. At the beginning of each round, a song starts playing, and arrows pop up on the screen.

You must press the corresponding symbols on your keypad while following the beat. The meter at the bottom of the screen shows you how well you’re doing. Move it all the way left, and you’ve won the round.

Note that Friday Night Funkin’, including this mod, is still in the developing stages. As a result, the flow can be way off for some songs.

Nothing new

The mod doesn’t offer much innovation to the already straightforward game. You’ll progress and compete against the same opponents but as a girl.

It’s a fun accessory, but you won’t get to explore any untrodden paths by installing it. It boasts the funky, retro graphics and loveable simplicity that made FNF stand out in the first place, but nothing more on top of that.

Our take

Overall, while there are still performance issues that need fixing, this mode is a fun option for those who’d like to see a female lead.

Should you download it?

Yes, if you’d like to perform the challenges as a heroine instead of a hero. Otherwise, you can enjoy FNF as is and get the same gameplay experience.
