Docktopus: Instant Data Monitoring via the Dock
Have you ever wanted to access performance data about your apps without having to go into Activity Monitor? Docktopus is the solution you've been looking for. This program allows you to place custom alerts on your Dock icons, providing instant information about CPU usage, application performance, memory utilization, and remaining free space on your hard drive.
With Docktopus, you can easily drag and drop badges onto your Dock icons to monitor various performance issues. For example, if you're concerned about Firefox consuming too much CPU and crashing, you can drag the CPU badge onto the Firefox Dock icon, set a CPU usage threshold, and receive a warning when it's reached.
While Docktopus offers a range of useful indicators, accessing the badge pop-up menu can be a bit awkward as you need to click on the small Docktopus icon next to your Stacks. Additionally, I noticed a noticeable slowdown in my Mac's performance while Docktopus was running, although it didn't consume much CPU. The performance returned to normal when I removed Docktopus.
Overall, Docktopus is a great idea and could be very useful for monitoring application performance. However, it needs to be more accessible and there are concerns about its impact on system performance.
