Basic Calculator doesn’t look or run poorly, it just doesn’t contain anything special.
Simplify and multiply
Where once upon a time this app may have been a lifesaver, most modern smartphones come with some form of calculator already installed.
This app looks clean but is pointless in the smartphone era. An actually calculator would be more useful than this app.
Let’s start with the look. It’s not bad; in fact, the interface is clean. Numbers are clearly visible and the text contrasts well against the header. When you input a problem and call for the solution, the little penguin gives a cute smile. It’s endearing, but it’s not enough to keep the app afloat.
You get accurate and quick results in a small package, but you can’t do anything complex, like bracketing or exponents. That would be the only reason to release an app like this.
What’s more is that you don’t receive errors that you should. Most calculators will return some variety of “undefined” in response to “1 divided by 0”, but not Basic Calculator. You’re met with a blank space next to the equals sign. The app has a cute penguin; why can’t you use him to express the issue? His face doesn’t even change. That’s a good opportunity to have him put on a terrified look.
Where can you run this program?
Basic Calculator is available for all Android and IOS devices.
Is there a better alternative?
Yes. Nearly any calculator on the App Store or Google Play would be functionally superior. Calculator++, for example, is capable of plotting graphs; if you need it for class, that’s a good option.
Basic Calculator is a mostly useless app. Aside from the cute penguin, it doesn’t do anything your stock calculator couldn’t do, and even the penguin is lacking in a basic error-state feature.
Should you download it?
Yes. But only if you don’t already have a similar application. If you have a calculator on your phone already, Basic Calculator would be alright for you.
