ViewRanger is a free to use trail-planning app that helps you prepare and track your next hike. The application can quickly help you scope out and set routes from a wide selection. The tool offers both a free and premium subscription with various benefits.

Large selection of routes

There are over 250,000 routes to pick from when planning your next outing. You can find any of these hikes using the search bar located above the map. Each course has a rating, helping you find the best adventure that appeals to you.

Track and plan your journey

Once you have decided on the route you'd like to take, you can quickly inspect it on the map. Additionally, you can use ViewRanger to view many trails' augmented reality if you're on a premium subscription. The app also syncs with your Apple Health app to monitor your steps and heart rate. 

Available offline

You can quickly download many of the maps you view within the application. This feature is handy if you experience signal issues on your mobile device. However, the downloaded files only include maps; VR and tracking features aren’t available when offline.

Premium features

The application features a subscription plan for premium features. ViewRanger charges you once per year, with the cheapest tier costing less than five dollars. The full use of the application and its features aren’t costly if you hike frequently.

The full application includes detailed topographical maps for many countries worldwide. Additionally, premium consists of a flyover feature with a detailed image of the trail you're on. Having a subscription is the easiest way to download many route maps, as it has no limits on the number you can store.

Our take

The ViewRanger application is a decent option to use if you aren't using its newer counterpart, Outdooractive, or other alternatives such as Map My Run. There are several useful features available at no cost and many in-depth options when paying for a premium subscription. Overall, the application is a great way to preview a trail before you travel to it.

Yes. If you're looking for a route planning application for hikes and trails, this is an excellent application to have on hand. On top of that, the community sharing feature means you'll get to learn about new trails that other users have discovered.
