Unlike Windows, the Mac OS uses three different types of information to determine which application is associated with a particular file. This includes not only the type and extension of a file but also, more importantly, the creator code. Modifying this information allows you to change the program associated with a particular file - although this is normally a tricky task if you don't know what you're doing.

Thankfully, TypeShuffler makes it easy to manipulate this information in order to change the application that opens a file. In fact, it's as simple as dragging and dropping a file onto the program icon then altering the creator code information by hand.
