Race for your life

See who’s faster in this cartoonish cousin of Need for Speed. Hedgehog fans will love the wide selection of racers and their unlockable powers.

A hedgehog bundle

You'll need to think fast in Sega’s racing joint if you want to take on Sonic characters in obstacle-strewn racetracks.

The game retains its high definition from the PC version. You’ll experience the same smooth graphics and bright interface. You have a couple of basic characters to choose from when you start the game. You’ll have to work towards unlocking any of the other ones. While the speed lives up to expectations, the lack of manual acceleration might kill it for some. If you’re a Need for Speed veteran, you’ll find this to be somewhat of a letdown.

Sonic Forces’ isometric view keeps you focused on the race. Unlike the PC version, Android players worry less about cursor movement. You only need to remember a few key actions like jump and duck. The rest relies on your reflexes. Don’t let the simple controls deceive you. Numerous complicated tasks await you on every track. Doing the right one at the right time directly impacts your success.

You get to race against other players on every run. In fact, Sonic forces you to go multiplayer (tough luck if you only want a simple solo session). You can’t choose who to compete with and have no interactive options during the race. Beat them or get crushed, either way, you might never see them again.

This game runs on coins and the money you use to purchase them. That said, it makes little sense for the app to bombard you with ads. Every race and every corner you see ads. You can unlock rewards by watching sponsored videos.

Where can you run this program?

You can run this program on Android 3.0 and later. It is also available on iOS and Windows.

Is there a better alternative?

No. True Sonic fans will want to stick with this game for its large selection of characters. You can check out Minion Rush for a similar feel, but it revolves around a different story.

Our take

The enduring progression of this game makes players stick around for much longer than other racing hits. Whether you’re familiar with Sonic or not, you will enjoy the rush.

Should you download it?
