Punakea is a small app that serves as an alternative to Spotlight for tagging your files and bookmarks. Developed by Nudgenudge, this free software aims to provide a way to identify similar files or those with similar names more distinctly. By adding tags to your files, you can make them easier to find and distinguish from one another.

The program sits discreetly on your sidebar and can be accessed with a simple click or a custom hotkey. You can drag and drop files into Punakea to start tagging them. As you create tags, a tag cloud builds up, allowing you instant access to the most frequently-used words. It offers an easy-to-use interface that doesn't require navigating the strict hierarchy of Finder's folder structure.

Although Punakea is fully compatible with Snow Leopard, there is a known bug with the Quick Search function. Additionally, while it supports a wide range of file types, there may be some that it does not accept. However, despite these limitations, Punakea remains one of the best tagging tools available for Mac users.
