Battle to the death in Mortal Kombat X

Mortal Kombat X is the tenth installment in the beat 'em up franchise noted for its graphic violence. Choose your fighter, master their moves and slay your opponents on the battlefield.

New additions to the series

Mortal Kombat X retains the formula that made previous games in the series popular while also coming up with some new additions. Once again, players can choose between a single-player story mode and a multiplayer mode, but there are new features that make a difference. For example, the game includes "Faction Kills" that are exclusive to the five in-game character factions.

What characters are featured in Mortal Kombat X?

The game has a total of 31 playable characters, although ten of these can only be obtained via DLC. Popular characters from previous installments in the franchise like Scorpion, Reptile, Kitana, Sonya Blade, and Raiden are joined by new additions like Cassie Cage and Kotal Kahn. Via the DLC packages, you can also play as movie characters like Alien, Predator, Jason Voorhees, and Leatherface.

Our take

The Mortal Kombat series has always prided itself on graphic gore; this is what sets it apart from more family-friendly fighting games like Naruto Shuppuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 and Marvel Contest of Champions. But Mortal Kombat X mixes the brutal graphics with sophisticated and varied gameplay: there are enough different modes here to please any player.

Should you download it?

Although its follow-up Mortal Kombat II improves in terms of graphics, Mortal Kombat X still has plenty to offer. The broad roster of characters, variety of gameplay modes, inventive attack animations, and sophisticated moves all make it a complex and rewarding game. IT is suited to both casual play and to long-term exploration as you strive to master the moves of each character.

Highs

  • Sophisticated character graphics
  • A variety of different modes
  • Inventive moves and fatalities

Lows

  • Too violent for younger players
  • Lacks the tag-team matches from earlier installments
