Another marvel from Microsoft
Get involved in this massive live streaming app. With a significant focus on the social networking aspect, this gaming experience allows you to observe and participate in gameplay.
Live play and comments
An interactive streaming experience where you can watch and participate in gaming. Follow your favorite gamers and cheer them on as they play.
Originally launched as Beam, Microsoft have rebranded this app as Mixer. It’s a live, real-time interactive tool that allows you to watch fellow players on their gaming journey. You can follow your favorites and even influence their gameplay.
Post live comments that pop up on the player’s screen, and watch other interactive posts and comments as they slide into frame. Ask game-related questions while the stream.
As a follower, you can play the same game you are watching and vote on specific aspects of it. Buttons will pop up on your screen to allow you to voice your opinion.
One of the dangers that Mixer presents is that comments and language can get offensive. Due to real-time streaming, it is difficult to manage. For that reason, the guidelines suggest that younger children should only watch at their parent’s discretion.
Regardless of the app being a great way to network with people having similar interests, the recommended age limit for players is no younger than 17 years.
There is a reporting feature to report offensive speech or lousy language. However, this isn’t enough.
Players can also earn virtual currency called Sparks. You can earn Sparks by watching and interacting in gameplay. A key feature, the Hype Zone, allows you to skip the boring parts and watch the exciting moments of play once a stream has finished. Sadly, this doesn’t last forever, and you’ll never be able to watch a stream after a few days have passed.
Where can you run this program?
Mixer runs on Android version 5.0 and later. It’s also available on iOS and most internet browsers.
Is there a better alternative?
No. For live streaming, this is a great way to both observe and interact. Twitch is another option, but it offers the same experience overall.
Our take
Being able to participate is a major feature of this exciting, fun app. The offensive language is an issue for younger, more impressionable players and should not be taken lightly. But it’s still an enjoyable experience.
Should you download it?
Yes. If you are a serious gamer and spend time online, Mixer is a great choice for you to get involved in other people’s gameplay.
