Godfall is a fantasy action RPG developed by Counterplay Games and distributed by Gearbox Publishing. Its setting features three realms, and within them, you take on the role of the last member of the King’s Order. It’s on you to prevent the apocalypse that’s threatening your world.

Fantasy storyline

As the developers disclaim, the game environment and mechanics draw inspiration from titles such as Dark Souls and Destiny. In this case, however, you’ll play across three domains of Earth, Air, and Water. 

Your character must prevent their brother, Marcos, from gathering enough power to become a deity and ruin the world. To do so, you’ll travel the various settings and kill his lieutenants, who act as game bosses.

Clashing steal with the bad guys awards you with loot, too, including many legendary weapons and items. While the concepts are all familiar, the game design gives it an air of fantasy, displaying various epic environments in great detail.

Familiar gameplay, engaging combat

The gameplay revolves around combat, which takes the looter-slasher approach. You complete missions, fight mid-level bosses, and get loot. In it, you find equipment that makes you more powerful and capable of taking on stronger enemies. 

The very combat is all about melee attacks, further boasting the design effort put in this game. Your attack repertoire is exceptionally varied, too, leaving room for strategic thinking and highly satisfying outcomes.

Since Godfall is online-only, you can play alone or in co-op mode. In the latter case, the game supports up to three players. 

Customizability galore

Another element that breaks the monotony of constant fighting comes from your character’s customizability. There are five weapon classes, which you have to combine with suitable armor. The variety of tools you can use is massive, from greatswords to dual blades. 

As you loot, you get access to augments that can customize your fighting style even more.

Our take

While Godfall doesn’t bring much novelty to the table, it’s a well-executed game through-and-through. There’s something to enjoy for novices and experienced genre buffs alike.

Yes. If you’re a fan of fantasy RPGs, you’ll love Godfall’s range of equipment, encounters, and overarching story. Play with friends to avoid monotonous gameplay elements, though.
