Measure and Explore the Magnetic Field with CrowdMag
CrowdMag, developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is a free iPhone app designed to allow users to measure the local magnetic field using their smartphones. The app offers a unique opportunity to view magnetic field data in graph or map form, displaying components such as Z (downward), H (horizontal intensity), and F (total intensity) in nanotesla units. One of its standout features is the Flight Mode, enabling users to contribute to scientific research by measuring magnetic fields during flights, turning journeys into scientific expeditions with a step-by-step tutorial for data collection.
CrowdMag extends beyond aerial measurements, catering to outdoor activities and personal experiments. Users can save measurements as "magtivities" and export them as CSV files for further analysis. The app includes a magnetic calculator based on the latest World Magnetic Model (WMM2020), offering magvar, dip angle, total magnetic field, and other components. Customizable recording frequencies and location accuracies, access to crowdsourced data, and export options via email or Google Drive enhance the app's functionality. With a live magnetic compass and 3D rendering, CrowdMag provides a comprehensive toolset for users to explore and analyze Earth's magnetic field.
