Backrooms: A Small First-Person Horror Game
Backrooms is a free game in which the player is trapped in seemingly endless featureless rooms and corridors, and must escape. The game is played in a first-person perspective and is a horror exploration game. Backrooms also features support for some VR headsets.
This game is in a similar vein to games like Slenderman and Siren Head in that it is relatively short, and the gameplay is quite basic. However, the focus of the game is on creating an unsettling atmosphere to put the player on edge.
The premise of Backrooms is based on a "creepypasta" story which alleges that it is possible to "clip" through reality and find yourself in the backrooms, an enormous maze of empty, carpeted rooms with repeating pattern wallpaper. The rooms are illuminated by harsh, loud, fluorescent lighting and contain entities that pursue the player.
The aim of the game is to escape the backrooms by navigating the featureless rooms in search of a way out while avoiding the entities that are roaming around. There is also a time limit, with failure to escape before the end of the timer being a fail state.
Though the developers have added a number of features to the game, such as multiple game modes and support for virtual reality, there is not much in the way of game mechanics. The game is free, with the developer offering incentives to donate for those who wish to support the continued development of the game.
With the premise of the game essentially being based on a horror story, the game is not suitable for younger players and people with a sensitive disposition.
Pros:
- Multiple game modes
- Supports virtual reality
- Simple gameplay, easy to pick up
Cons:
- Not much replayability
- Not suitable for younger or easily scared players
