Free open source version of The Game of Life
If you've ever heard of 'The Game of Life' then you'll probably like what you see in Golly. The Game of Life is a simple set of rules also known as 'cellular automation', which was originally developed in the 1970s. The state of each cell depends on its neighbors, creating highly random and complex structures. Golly comes bundled with hundreds of pre-programmed structures and allows you to create your own. However, Golly is a complex mathematical puzzle based on algorithms and cellular automation that may be difficult for general users to understand. For mathematicians and Game of Life fans, Golly will surely appeal, but for others, it may just be a collection of retro animations.
