Ancient Dungeon VR by Eric Thullen, also known as ErThu on itch.io, is an immersive indie virtual reality action game. It sends you off to explore mysterious dungeons and fight monsters across randomly generated maps.
A highly-interactive world
This game seamlessly places dungeon crawling in a world so realistic it’s almost palpable, generating a unique, immersive experience.
This dungeon crawler features realistic, rogue-lite gameplay. It draws inspiration from classic fantasy RPGs, but omits magic, having you rely on your skill and melee weapons to fight your way through the environment.
The procedurally-generated levels ensure that you will not get bored with the world around you as you explore it. The maps are ever-transforming, connecting different biomes for you to investigate. The number and type of enemy monsters also keep changing. You might spend one round fighting beasts, and the next is riddled with wights and skeletons. Either way, no two are exactly alike.
You might also run into friendly NPCs all throughout the game. Sometimes, you will have to save them, haggle for a package, or they might even send you on various quests missions.
You will start the game by entering a dungeon, looking to upgrade your weapons, and develop abilities to increase your skill level. With over 100 available upgrades, you can create various game-changing combinations depending on the enemy or situation.
The physics-based game mechanics feel very lifelike. Your movement will react to the weight of the items you’re carrying, hitting objects creates different effects depending on your impact, and monsters react to the strength and direction of your attacks realistically.
Where can you run this program?
This game runs on Windows version 7 and up as well as on various Android devices. Regarding VR equipment, you’ll need an HTC Vive or Oculus Rift S headset to get the best experience.
Is there a better alternative?
No, at least if you’re looking for a virtual reality dungeon crawler. Otherwise, Delver and Are You A Wizard are enjoyable indie dungeon titles, while Ghost Giant is an exciting VR game with appealing graphics and design.
Although the interface lags at times, the ever-changing maps and abundance of areas to explore are very well-executed, creating an exceptionally realistic and exciting game.
Should you download it?
Yes. Even if you don’t have a headset, this game is an engaging adventure that keeps you coming back to it.
