Adobe continues to be the powerhouse for developers and creatives alike. Adding to its roster of top-notch dev program is its runtime environment,  Adobe AIR. On the surface level, this application is packed with impressive features that can equip you with the tools needed to code native apps for a multitude of platforms. Here's a rundown on how Adobe AIR works with Android.

Ease of use

Adobe AIR works best for entry-level programmers who want to build their careers and show their ideas.

Adobe AIR is the runtime environment built by the famed creative development company for developers to test their creations on different platforms. It's often compared with Adobe Flash Player, but it actually works past browsers and they are great complements to each other.  Adobe AIR works best for entry-level programmers who want to build their careers and show their ideas. It's easy to develop for and if you're already familiar with Adobe Animate, using this tool would be a breeze. It's stable across multiple different platforms and can quickly get a working prototype. It's also compatible with Flash-based applications from basic Flash games to apps you can run on a desktop.  Using Adobe AIR, You may combine different coding languages to deploy rich internet applications on a broad range of devices like computers, notebooks, tablets, smartphones, and even TV. It allows you to use familiar tools such as Dreamweaver, Flash Builder, or just about any text editor you need for building your application. Compared to Flash Player, AIR incorporates technologies originally developed in Flash Player and enables RIAs on the desktop.

While most say Adobe AIR works great, others encounter issues such as the software freezing while it's running in the background. Others also reported experiencing lags especially while saving their files. Generally speaking, users are happy with the software. Adobe periodically updates the program, improving on its usability to ensure optimal performance.

Where can you run this program?

Adobe AIR works on Windows, Mac OS, Ubuntu Linux,  iOS, and Android. If you plan on running the dev tool on your Android device, make sure that your operating system is at least 4.0 or above. For optimal performance, Adobe recommends using a device with ARMv7/x86 processor with vector FPU, minimum 550MHz, OpenGL ES 2.0, H.264 and AAC HW decoders. If you're using an iPhone, make sure your OS is updated to 9 or higher.

Getting Adobe AIR for your computer? Makes sure to have Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows 8.1 Classic or Windows 10. Keep in mind that AIR SDK Development supports Microsoft® Windows 7 and above, 64-bit only. Mac OS users need to update their system to Mac OS X v10.10 or above. While AIR SDK Development supports Mac OS 10.12 and above. If you're using Ubuntu, you will need a Hardware Abstraction Layer to play protected content.

Is there a better alternative?

Adobe Flash Player is one of the programs often compared with Adobe AIR. This software works as a browser plug-in that lets you run rich content like 2D or 3D animation and games. Unlike Adobe's runtime environment software, Flash Players does not work outside the browser.

Xcode is an integrated development environment made for MacOS, iOS, tvOS, and watchOS. It's best used for developing, testing, and debugging applications and included a wide collection of software dev tools including Apple's Objective C compiler. Unlike AIR, however, it offers a limited number of platforms specifically to Apple machines.

Our take

Adobe AIR provides a powerful runtime environment for you to test applications on multiple platforms. It's best paired with applications from the Adobe creative suite. It's easy to use and works without a hitch.
