Card battles in real time
TEPPEN is all about throwing your repertoire of heroes at your enemy with strategy in mind. With this title, you'll journey through a storyline, collect units. and explore a variety of modes.
This game hands you a small deck and with that, beckons you to find additions to it as you progress through different areas. Turn-based fights have been thrown out the window and replaced with live-action combat.
In TEPPEN, you’ll pick a main hero and build a specific set of cards. Each of these boasts a fighter that you can use in confrontations against numerous enemies. Your hero, though, is special because it comes from a line-up from a few different franchises. These include titles like Street Fighter, Monster Hunter, Mega Man X, Devil May Cry, and Resident Evil. The selection is updated consistently, so there’s always more to choose from.
When it comes to the actual fights, there are a few mechanics that make TEPPEN stand out. Rather than tapping units, acquiring mana, or using specific resources, you simply place your fighters on the board and watch as they engage the opposing player’s team. However, you can use action cards to pause gameplay and enable "Active Response". This buys you a few seconds to organize your reaction to certain moves, trigger effects, and drive the battle back to its intense nature. This pacing feels fresh. It’s a fun approach to the usually slower alternative style of play in the genre.
There are also quite a few modes to choose from. Ranked matches pit you against other players in an online fight to climb the leaderboard. The Grand Prix offers time-limited elimination rounds, creating more stressful encounters. These play out as you’d expect, and the overall gameplay is surprisingly smooth. There’s even a solo mode. However, you’re still required to use an internet connection for this; the online-only requirement for single player is questionable.
