Free app to control older Sonos products
You’ve probably heard about Sonos’ new S2 operating system and are wondering if your old S1 devices will be compatible with it.
Not all S1 devices will be but don’t worry, you’re not going to be left behind. Sonos has released the S1 Controller app for iPhone.
What is Sonos S1 Controller?
Some of the earliest Sonos products that are older won’t be compatible with the new S2 OS. Rather than rendering those devices obsolete, the S1 Controller allows you to continue controlling your older Sonos systems from your iOS device. This app was previously known as simply the Sonos Controller, but with the launch of the S2 system, it became necessary to differentiate between the two controllers.
Does Sonos S1 still work?
Absolutely. Sonos recognized that you’ve already invested in S1 products and services, so the last thing they want to do is render them obsolete with the launch of the S2 system. Even if you have one of the oldest S1 devices, you’ll still be able to use your device and services as normal and control them with the S1 Controller.
Is Sonos Beam S1 compatible?
Yes, the Beam is one of the S1 devices that’s compatible with both the S1 and S2 operating systems, so you’ll have the option to upgrade. If you upgrade, you’ll be needing the S2 Controller, because the S1 Controller will no longer be compatible with the Beam.
If you choose not to, you’ll be able to use the S1 Controller app with it. If you upgrade, then the S2 Controller is what you’ll need. If you also have S2-only devices, you’ll have to control them separately with the S2 Controller app.
Our take
There’s no great reason—other than personal preference—to downgrade. Remember, S1 devices no longer receive software or feature upgrades—only security updates. However, if you want to downgrade, you can, provided you already have at least one other S1 device.
Should you download it?
Yes. If you have old S1 devices that aren’t compatible with the S2 operating system, then it’s definitely worth downloading so you can control them from your iOS device.
If you have a Sonos audio setup, then there’s no alternative app for setting up, configuring, and controlling your system.
