Devolver Digital brings to market a story of an unnamed girl in GRIS. You get to witness her bringing color back into her own life. This five-hour evocative experience occurs through solving challenges without the use of words.

GRIS will pull you into its colorful world and wrap you in its beautiful design.

Much like Journey, you travel through a strange world that evokes deep emotions in the process. The point is to grow to understand the character’s trials and successes through the shifting colors from dark to bright.

As the storytelling weaves into the design, the trip becomes fundamentally beautiful. Unfortunately, when you take GRIS and compare it to Celeste, another emotional journey-based story, the runtime is quite short.

Although Devolver Digital did a great job with the design, the game is not made for replaying. The puzzles that you have to overcome in the game don’t lend themselves to be played again, and the universe is not expansive enough to keep exploring.

Is there a better alternative?

No, there are no better alternatives. The others that are similar to GRIS have their own niches. Journey features stunning graphics but provides a whole different tone. Celeste has a much darker yet direct approach to dealing with struggles.

Our take

GRIS is a visually stimulating experience with its color-based storytelling. The engine is well crafted and interesting. You'll see that it won't take you very long to finish the story, but it will be worth the experience.
